Preferably, our ideal candidate will be someone who already has a strong presence in Chicago and the surrounding areas; is closely connected in the community via local boards, non-profits, heavy volunteering and the like. This person will minimally have 5 years of community/grass roots advocacy experience in managed care, public health or social/community based services. Ideally, our selected candidate will have experience managing others remotely and effectively be able to balance priorities successfully.

Some considerations before applying to this position:

· This position requires regular travel (including overnights) that may include initial training in one of our other markets/states; within the state and locally on a regular basis as well as representing WellCare at conferences, etc.

· The general hours for this exempt position are 8-5 but candidate will need to be flexible to attend leadership meetings, reoccurring community and coalition meetings and events after hours

· The first 3-6 months will be all in office-work from home potential thereafter

· Must have a valid driver’s license

Supervises the statewide community advocacy department. Work with market leadership to drive direction of the advocacy program. Creates and implements market focused strategy that includes positioning WellCare as a thought leader in the community. Establishes annual advocacy outreach plans including those for special populations as required by the state. Cultivates relationships with community based organizations, advocacy and civic/community leaders throughout the state. Manages a team that researches social safety net providers in order to populate and update “My Family Navigator,” a database of regional social safety net programs and services and identifies creative gap-fill strategies.

Essential Functions:

  • Manages a staff of Community Advocates to maintains relationships with important social safety net providers in order to populate and update “My Family Navigator,” (Navigator) a database of regional social safety net programs and services, to keep the Navigator database as accurate and up-to-date as possible.
  • Collaborates with market leadership to positively positions WellCare as a thought leader among community health leaders and public health planning collaboratives.
  • Utilizes social safety net data in Navigator compared to county public health data and membership data to identify social safety net gaps in communities to establish HealthConnection Councils throughout the state and identify creative gap-fill strategies.
  • Creates and launches need-based partnerships with social safety net providers, supporting evidence-based programs with positive health outcomes.
  • Identifies inbound and outbound grant opportunities in collaboration with Advocacy & Community Based Programs Department.
  • Provides coaching, counseling, training and performance management to current and new Community Advocates.
  • Performs other duties as assigned
Additional Responsibilities:
    Candidate Education:
    • Required A Bachelor's Degree in public health, social services and/or related field
    Candidate Experience:
    • Required 5 years of experience in community advocacy and/or “grass roots” advocacy efforts in Managed Healthcare, Public Health, Social Services, and/or Community Based Organizations
    • Required 1 year of experience in managed care
    • Required 1 year of management experience
